In-Tune: Set in Sand

Style: Electronica

"Set In Sand has created a unique style of his own through the fusion of many other styles. Crunchy Trip Hop beats lay the groundwork for his guitar based IDM ala DoF and Skytree. As an added treat, cLOUDDEAD reminiscent vocals bounce in and out of songs. Mini Splintered Things is the perfect album to listen to while wandering aimlessly over sidewalks on a sunny spring day, stepping to the beat, and bobbing your head in rhythm. Get this album so you can say you were a fan when Set In Sand was still underground, because he won't be for long." - Set in Sand

Style: Worldtronica

"Djpe (aka Paul Edwards) has brought a living breathing "worldtronica" album into existence. A wide range of global sounds re-imagined through technology. incorporating indian ragas, brazilian samba, chinese poetry and beautiful folk songs. Adding other worldly flavors and his own brand of future jazz. Producer djpe and guests take the listener on a journey that is best enjoyed not on the dance floor, but chilled. Djpe can also be heard on THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT - remixed (Ropeadope), as well as his own TO SIX BILLION (Zenapolae)" - Djpe / Paul Edwards

"Another guest artist to the Kahvi Collective netlabel, this time from the US. Perhaps familar to some of you, Nedavine creates good solid beats but with an abstract idm finish. Some interesting harsh elements mixed in with more ambient polish creates a curious EP, a slight oddity but loads of variety, nonetheless an interesting addition to the collective." - Nedavine / Kahvi Collective

In-Tune: Zengineers

Style: Electronica

"Science is exploring human nature in explicit detail these days. The human genome has been decoded, our brain-structure has been understood and can be put into images. It's all right there, all this data, and still - does it really give an answer to the question what being human is all about? No, of course not. After all, what we see is just a recording, just one perspective on the real thing. Just like a map is not identical with the territory. With their debut EP on iD.EOLOGY, Zengineers offer some second thoughts on this thesis. Much like the Zen master asks his disciple "Who creates the tree at the end of the road?", the duo - formed by iD.EOLOGY's very own Phour Trakk and vocalist Sick-E - simply trickle their very own blend of lounge, breakbeat, funk, pop and hip-hop into your ears. And really, they have nothing more to add but the title. If you feel a wee bit doubtful now, don't worry. It's all part of the idea of Zen. So just open up and let this EP settle into your mind. And maybe, much like the Zen disciple who realises that to him this tree only exists as an image in is mind, meaning he's the one creating it, you might realise that this music present as an impression in your mind again triggers so many images that it's like a whole new world inside your skull. So maybe, just maybe, the map really IS the territory. Or maybe, just maybe, in the case of Zengineers, for once it's the map that's creating the territory." - Zengineers / iD.EOLOGY

In-Tune: Organic Frequencies

Style: Electronica

"We may be listening, but how many of us can say we are really hearing? Modern music seems to stick to a set template guaranteeing commercial gain. Boy bands and Girl bands releasing cover after cover version of other artist's music. Yet sampling is generally seen as poaching, can it not also be seen as a compliment, A way by which you can emphasise a specific moment or memory, like something you hear as a child? Organic Frequencies is building on the idea of living sound (hence the name) Creating atmospheres and sounds which morph and change as it blends infinitely"

In-Tune: Wavespan

Style: Electronica

"Definitely one of the classiest Monotonik releases in a while, a more ambient, sonorous, consciousness-expanded universe, thanks to Santa Cruz, California duo Wavespan, aka Phil Garrison and Alex Lumb, and their great self-titled debut LP. Garrison started producing electronic music in 1998, and he founded Complex Logic Recordings, a small record label, in 2001. His production credits include Organic Resonance Project's Lucid EP and several remixes as ind01e; in 2005, he designed patches for H.G. Fortune's (VSTi) STS-21 Transition Synthesizer. Alex Lumb has been drumming for over 20 years, in addition to producing electronic music under various names. Most interestingly as a touchpoint, perhaps, this LP has been mastered by noted ambient musician Robert Rich, helping add to the carefully positioned ethereal drift. Over the entire 49-minute LP, there are a plethora of high points, but many may be initially fascinated by a rare Monotonik-released dub track up front, in the form of the sparse 'Concentration Dub', before the epic 11-minute long 'On The Nature Of Consciousness' takes us away with almost Orb-like spoken word samples and some beautifully placed ambience. Other highlights include the mild paranoia of the JFK assassination-sampling 'Single Bullet Theory', the straight-ahead groove of 'Origin Of Species', and the marvellously placed groove of 'Momentary Bliss'. Overall, this is a startlingly professional album which, if you like it, you can order a copy of the CD, or simply donate funds of your choice via PayPal to compensate for the more than pleasant listening experience." - Monotonik / Wavespan

In-Tune: Jettatura

Style: Electronica

"However you take the music of NYC's Jettatura, and whether you hone in on its fatback beatscapes or its eerie, sampladelic high-end, you'll come away with a haunting combination of cinematic sounds, rock to electro-textures and stone grooves. But while they may be eclectic in influence, the two-man group, drummer/producer Dave Hill Jr. and multi-instrumentalist James Rotondi, have turned their free flowing creative operating system into a dark, compelling style that could be a spooky cousin to Jon Hassell's global funk minimalism; Sigur Ros's ambient-rock abstractions; Talvin Singh's motoric ethno-techno; Angelo Badalamenti's emo-surf intrigue; Dan the Automator's art- hop orchestrations; or even the lap-top blip-hop of Autechre and Kid606. But if Jettatura is that arty, it's still economical; four-minute instrumental songs based around a brooding breed of hooks and vamps." - Jettatura

In-Tune: Bacanal Intruder

Style: Electronica

"Bacanal Intruder brings Zymogen a bit far from its usual habits, but this joyful derailment is definitely a pleasure. A micro-ep with five little tracks and five little melodies sketched with guitars, harmonica, melodica and other strange instruments processed with computer over glitches and digital beats. Luis handles these sounds carefully creating different melodic patterns and, moving from different atmospheres, is able to give you a carefree smile with ironic and beautiful music. A melodica is tickled by microsounds during "Peladilla" to introduce you into this strange world where you'll hear a baby voice singing with you, but suddenly "La Pulga" is there to wake you up with its chaotic melodies and fast random sounds, and then a break; "Lloriao", simply a nice song, nothing more than that, and sometimes it's lovely realizing how simplicity could be beautiful by itself, just a riff, just a melody...it's enough to feel its beauty. Just some minutes and we're already at the end of the ep, yes, but what an end! "Modem Prelude" and "Modem" are something really moving with a stretched guitar and a tender baby voice wich explains you what's the meaning of tenderness in 3 minutes: keep attention!" - Zymogen / Bacanal Intruder

Style: Electronica

"A group of producers, consisting of guitarist Nigel Watson, bassist Tom Dean, and keyboardist Tate North. The trio blend their own style of funk, jazz, reggae, and dub with beats ranging from downtempo to drum and bass, dub, and hip hop. Established in 2003, TNT is a hybrid of electronica and live instrumentation. TNT Recordings is the three headed love-child of dance, groove, and psychedelia. TNT produces raw grooves that feed upon the emotion and energy of the original creative roots. Initial foundations are established in a live session, captured, and then shaped into their final forms without straying from the earliest framework. The final tracks are mixed deep for your headphones and soundsystem, and locked tight for the deepest of beat-matching." - TNT Recordings

Style: Electronica

Since their last profile in October, Astral Navigations has released a second EP. "This EP is opening with "A kleptomaniac stole my heart", similar atmosphere to their previous EP. Next "Driving when I shouldn't" is 4/4 beat, this is the first time to listen their housy tune. Then "Not entirely honest" turns into IDM-like trip-hop, one of my favorite. 4th track "Tell the world I'm sorry" is 4/4 again, this one is headed for techno. And warm chill "Looking down on mother earth" gently closes this EP." - Astral Navigations

The Mullet will mix and match any genra from Breaks, Techno, Drum and Bass, House, Jazz, Funk, Trance and Classical. The FM was formed out of a need to put together good quality, well produced beats and sounds, that would make an impact on the dance floor and also stand up in a critical listening environment. The main remit of the Mullet is to draw influences from a wide range of sources, including, the more experimental sides of dance music, funk, psychedelica and punk, but still come out with tunes that satisfy both feet and mind. The Mullet so far has represented nu-skool breaks and rolling beats, with debut Vinyl on Chi, the bassline monstor Cellophane Satisfaction, but recently breaks/techno hybrid tracks have been forthcoming such as Fillet and also, Ruff Machine being a fine example of techno/house." - Ferocious Mullet

In-Tune: Urban Myth Club

Style: Downtempo

"It’s not often that a band from England debut on North American radio, are confirmed for Glastonbury, The Big Chill festivals, gatecrash the iTunes Top 30 with their debut single, and all before anyone in their homeland has ever heard of them. The Club formed when electronica artist Dezz met Hollywood film composer Stephen Barton, who had recently returned to the UK having worked on blockbusters such as Gladiator. The duo created the downtempo tracks that plotted the future course of the Club. When LA called with the offer to write the music for Shrek 2 and Narnia, Stephen took a sabbatical from the Club and the idea of a collective was born. Dezz hooked up with enigmatic producer Ian Sanderson and Urban Myth Club's rocket left orbit. Additional members of the collective soon followed including downtempo legend Andy Dragazis (Blue States), and vocalists Clare Szembek (The Funky Lowlives) and Rowan Godel. Other celebrity members remain confidential. The Urban Myth Club was meant to be a secret, but a leaked album sampler found its way to a Canadian DJ who, in an unprecedented move by commercial radio, playlisted all six tracks on his show. After two years in the studio, Urban Myth Club have crafted an album of beautifully eclectic tracks, fusing organic electronica with anything that tickled their fancy, and the results are destined to become a million personal soundtracks." - Urban Myth Club
